Tennis in the United States is played on three kinds of places: public park courts run by a city or county, member clubs and country clubs with their own pros and leagues, and commercial tennis centers that sell court time by the hour. Public courts are usually free and first come, first served, with a posted limit (often 60-90 minutes when others are waiting); busier cities run online reservation systems with a small fee and a permit for the season. Indoor courts are rented by the hour and booked days ahead in winter. Most facilities are hard courts; clay is common in the Southeast and at private clubs, and grass is rare. Lights extend play into the evening at many parks, sometimes with a coin or app-operated switch.

McLean is in Virginia, in the Southeast, where summers are long, hot and humid, winters are mild, and afternoon thunderstorms and the hurricane season from June to November can change plans at short notice. US addresses list the street number and name, then the city, state abbreviation and ZIP code, and McLean follows the same pattern; a suite or apartment number such as Ste 200 refers to a unit inside the building. The map link on this page shows the exact spot.

Tuckahoe is simply a wonderful place. A great club full of friendly families. Managed very well from involved members that adore it. Many parents were members here when they were kids. There is an atmosphere of belonging. Swim and Dive are excellent and have great coaching. The kids just love the place, their friends, training, hanging out there, being part of the team, and volunteering or coaching as they grow up. They learn, grow up, and acquire lifetime skills, such as leadership, work ethics, and resilience. Every member treasures this club. My family certainly does.

Tuckahoe is a wonderful club for families with and without kids. The only club in the area with an indoor pool that remains open year-round. The clubโs strong family orientation makes an ideal place to bring your kids, and they have plenty of space to run and play while parents socialize together. Their tennis infrastructure is amazing, and the swim team is the leading NVSL squad!

Meh. We were members for three years but ultimately we left for a few reasons. First the pool is always freezing. It doesnโt stop people from getting in, but it is definitely uncomfortably cold for us. Second, the lifeguards literally live on their whistles. They are always yelling at people and itโs super annoying because most of the time itโs just people having fun and itโs not dangerous. One of the last straws was when one screamed across the pool at two other lifeguards for chatting during the 15min adult swim time. Seriously? Keep that behind closed doors or walk your lazy self over there and tell the two lifeguards to stop talking. Third, we got a letter that dues were going up 20% and would continue to go up because there was $3M of deferred maintenance needed. For the price of initiation ($3000) and the annual fee of $2500 it was a colossal waste of money for a more than subpar club. When we emailed that we were quitting they were back: โthanks.โ Didnโt even ask why. So ridiculous.

This large private club offers excellent swim and tennis programs for children and year round swimming for all ages at a reasonable price. Due to its size, it takes some effort to get to know other members but it us worth the effort. There is usually a wait list but the winter swim membership is open for swimming fall to late spring and is a good way to know the club.
